In front of it, a small, lovely potted violet sits in the middle of a pile of clothes, placed as if the book's reader had set it there to mark her spot in the world.

A small orange kitten sniffed at the violet, decided it wasn't any good to eat, and tottered off to play with her foster sister.

So started Tara Maclay's weekend.
